European Council: Juncker, “Treaties will not be rewritten”. Meeting the Scottish Prime Minister in the afternoon

Jean-Claude Juncker

(Brussels) At the end of the European Council, mainly focussed on Brexit, the President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, seems determined to go on with his job, despite the British desertion. “Of course, there will be no secret or informal negotiations with London. There will be no à la carte Europe or single market either”. Juncker insists that the EU Treaties must be adhered to, and “the British citizens have freely chosen” to leave the European Union. Then, he admits: “today it has been said that the EU is to be reformed, but this is about reforms that implement” the European integration process, not the other way around. Then, he points out: “There will be no new European Convention, and the Treaties will not be rewritten”. At 5.00 pm, Juncker will be meeting, as he admits himself, the Scottish Prime Minister, Nicola Sturgeon: “but – he promptly points out – we are not going to meddle in the UK’s domestic political processes”. From Brussels, after the end of the summit, the remaining 27 heads of state and government, after Cameron’s exit, make a few fleeting statements. They commemorate the Istanbul victims and look – not without concern – to the journey that is in store for the EU.
