Culture: COMECE, presentation of the book “What soul for Europe?” in Brussels

(Brussels) There is “a cultural history that has irrigated Europe and shaped its identity”. And Christianity is a crucial part of it: “after the fall of the Roman Empire, it cemented the nations and promoted culture”. Hence, we can speak of “Europe’s soul” and Christian identity, which has become more complex “in the debate with other religions and currents of thought”. This is the thesis underlying the book “Quelle âme pour l’Europe?” (“What Soul for Europe?”, Lumen Vitae Ed.), which will be presented at the headquarters of the Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Community (COMECE) in Brussels on Monday, 4 July. The reflections in the book come from a series of conferences hosted by the Sedes Sapientiae Foundation and the Theological Faculty of Leuven in 2013. The authors of the book are Gérard-François Dumont, professor at the Sorbonne University and a member of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences; Vincent Dujardin, president of the Institute for European Studies at the Catholic University of Leuven; Jan De Volder, professor of Church History at the same University; and the Bishop of Liège Jean-Pierre Delville, who was still lecturing at the University of Leuven in 2013. Part of the book also focuses on how this identity has taken shape in the construction of the EU and how it may develop in the future, a topic that will also been addressed during the presentation. Speakers will include Mgr. Delville and Jan De Volder; the Apostolic Nuncio to the EU Alain Lebeaupin; and COMECE spokesperson Johanna Touzel.
