United States: “Fortnight for Freedom”, two weeks of initiatives for religious freedom

“Witnesses of liberty” is the theme of the fifth edition of the “Fortnight for Freedom” (Two weeks for liberty), the campaign for religious freedom promoted by the US bishops Conference. The event opened yesterday and closes on Independence Day, 4 July. Prayers, reflections, catechesis and demonstrations: with the aim of mobilising the Catholic community and raising public awareness on defence of religious freedom, sanctioned by the First Amendment of the US Constitution. The homily of the final Mass in the Basilica of the National Sanctuary of the Immaculate Conception of Washington will be delivered by Bishop of Pittsburgh David Zubik. “Zubik” is also the name of the court case filed by Catholics and US Catholic entities – such as the diocese of Pittsburgh – against the federal requirement according to which all employers should provide health cover to their employees, including contraceptives and abortion drugs; even though employees are morally against those practices.
