“How many times do we meet a poor person, coming towards us? We may be generous, we may have compassion, but we don’t touch that person, usually. We give him/her money, but we don’t touch his/her hand. And we forget what the body of Christ is!”. Those words were spoken by the Pope during today’s hearing, dedicated to the healing of the leper. He pointed out that Jesus was “deeply impressed” by that man: “Against the provisions of the law of Moses forbidding to approach a leper, Jesus stretches His hand and even touches him”. “Jesus teaches us not to be afraid of touching the poor or the outcast, because He is in them”; the warning of Francis: “Touching the poor may purify us from hypocrisy, and his condition may unsettle us”. At this point, the Pope referred to a group of young refugees sitting on the stage, close to him, and spoke without reading: “Touch the outcast! Today these boys are accompanying me: many people think they’d better stay in their land, but they suffered a lot in there. They are our refugees. However, many people regard them as outcast; please, they are our brothers!”. The 15 thousand believers in St. Peter’s Square, today, welcomed those words with thunderous applause. “The Christian does not exclude anyone, gives place to anyone, and lets anyone come!”, went on the Pope, still out of text.
