Sweden: ecumenical project of Churches, training on migration and integration matters

Over the next three years, the Churches in Sweden will be engaged in training activities in the areas of migration and integration under the project “#Värme” (Warmth), which will be launched in autumn. As the Christian Council of Sweden reports, the project received a contribution of 3.6 million Swedish crowns (€356,000) from a European fund to train “at least 800 new persons in the reception of asylum seekers in Sweden”, Lasse Svensson, president of the Christian Council of Sweden, explained. The training is aimed at priests, pastors, deacons and volunteers engaged in the life of local communities. Two-day seminars will be held in 20 towns in Sweden, the first one on legal matters (rules of asylum and labour law), and the second one on psychological and social matters. Two pilot seminars will be tested in late autumn 2016, and will then be held on a regular basis. “Due to the large numbers of asylum seekers in Sweden, who often come into contact with local churches during their journey, the staff and volunteers of many communities have pointed to the need to develop a greater ability to better respond to the needs of these people”, said Björn Cedersjö, in charge of the working group on migration at the Christian Council, which, “with its 26 member churches, wants to adopt a global approach for a training initiative aimed at showing warmth”.
