Cardinal Stella: about lifelong education, “making sure priests inwardly hold on and are faithful to the Gospel”

“The bishop’s main pastoral care, as Francis points out, is taking care of priests. Supporting priests is becoming a priority for the dioceses. Priests need to be supported, taken up, and, above all, listened to. They must feel part of a presbytery and a diocesan family”. This is claimed by cardinal Beniamino Stella, prefect of the Congregation for the Clergy, who in an interview with SIR reflects on the issue of lifelong education. “Yearly exercises, monthly retreats, spiritual guidance are tools that must be part of the priests’ educational plans. One must make sure priests inwardly hold on and are faithful to the Gospel. When priests get lost in the night – he adds –, they must be aware that even at that time the bishop is praying and waiting for them. Bishops are more aware of the need to support priests in happy times as much as at times of desertion and maybe betrayal”.
