Brexit: “Open Letter” of the European Churches (Cec), “Europe needs new vision”

At this moment in time, the European Union is at “a crossroads”. Many are the challenges that Europeans are faced with: from economic crisis to euro-scepticism, from migration to terrorism. But it is actually these challenges that now call the European citizens to “join forces to feed hope and find constructive solutions to joint problems”. But, to do this, Europe needs “new vision”. This is the beginning of the “Open Letter” that the Conference of European Churches – a body that brings together the Christian Churches of the Orthodox, Protestant, Anglican traditions of the continent – sends its communities and organisations to start “a discussion on the future of Europe and on the role of the Churches in this process”. The Letter is published – Cec explains – just before the UK Referendum of 23rd June (Brexit), which is “evidence” – they say – of the problems the continent is going through. Developments in Europe towards more unity and cooperation, that used to be so widely appreciated until a few decades ago, are now challenged”. Among the challenges listed in the hefty 20-page document, the Churches include Euro-scepticism. “In many member countries of the EU, euro-scepticism is on the rise. Political parties and groups propose their countries to leave the European Union”. In this respect, the Letter mentions the referendums in Greece, Holland and Hungary and the forthcoming one in the UK.
