Netherlands: Msgr. Van den Hende new bishops’ president after Card. Eijk

Mons. Hans Van den Hende

New leader of the Netherlands Bishops’ Conference announced through press release issued after the meeting of Dutch bishops last 14 June: bishop of Rotterdam Msgr. Hans Van den Hende replaced Cardinal of Utrecht Willem Eijk, who “had already said at the beginning of this year that he would not accept re-election after a five-year president mandate, owing to health problems, too”. Bishop of Breda Msgr. Jan Liesen was elected vice president, while Msgr. Gerardt de Korte was elected third member of the Permanent Council of the Bishops’ Conference, a sort of “executive committee preparing the monthly meeting of bishops”. “We are grateful to Cardinal Eijk for the great efforts he made during his office as president, performed with great care and skills”, declared Msgr. van den Hende. In particular, the Bishops’ Conference, in collaboration with the Conference of Dutch Religious (KNR) was committed “to helping, acknowledging and refunding the victims of sexual abuses in the Church since 1945”, and took “measures to fight and prevent those unacceptable conducts in the Church”. Moreover, in these five years, the Office of the Bishops’ Conference was reorganised and the staff was “reduced by one third because of financial problems and transfer to the new seat”.
