Comece: report on “Promoting peace in the world, Europe’s call”. EU’s role

(Brussels) “The first task for a veritable European peace policy must consist of promoting a preventative peace and converting violent conflicts through the tools of justice”, without “neglecting the dimension of common security and defence within the European integration project, along with the efforts that need to be made to lay the grounds for disarmament, including nuclear disarmament, in Europe and in the world”: this is the underlying spirit of the document called “Promoting peace in the world, Europe’s call”, which the bishops of the Commission of EU Bishops Conferences (Comece) submitted in Brussels today to “help politicians work out the final recommendations about peace and security that are on the agenda of the European Council in late June”. The new global strategy for foreign policy and security that the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini, is working at cannot leave out the fact the EU is a peace project: to be “up to its call”, it must “strengthen the connections between domestic and foreign policy tools” and achieve more “consistency and evenness” by coordinating “political guidelines and economic resources”. The presentation of the document was attended by Jean Kockerols, auxiliary bishop of Malines-Brussels and deputy president of Comece, and Brigadier General Heinz Krieb of the EU Military Staff (EUMS).
