United Kingdom: “Maranatha Community”, ecumenical prayer in London ahead of the EU referendum

Ten days ahead of the referendum in which British citizens will decide whether to stay in or leave the “common European home”, the Maranatha Community, which brings together Christians from different religious denominations, is holding a Prayer Vigil in London to seek “unity with the whole Body of Christ at this critical time in the history of Britain and Europe”. Christians will unite in prayer at the Emmanuel Centre in Marsham Street from 7pm to 9pm tonight to pray as one with Christians of other countries, to ask God that “the Body of Christ be sufficiently strong and may continue to be strong regardless of the outcome of the vote”, reads a leaflet disseminated by the Maranatha Community among Christian organisations in the United Kingdom. “Our gathering – the leaflet reads – will not focus on how to vote, but rather, we will come together to humble ourselves, pray and seek God’s face, repenting for the sin of our nations, asking for God’s mercy and praying He will heal these lands”. The leaflet also recalls the “deep spiritual crisis affecting both the United Kingdom and the European Union, which is the cause of many of the evils of our time”. Tomorrow, Tuesday, 14 June, a few hours after the Vigil organized by the Maranatha Community, Christians will gather again at Westminster for the “National Parliamentary Prayer Breakfast”, a day of prayer and meetings with Bishop Angaelos, head of the Coptic Orthodox Church in the UK, who will be the main speaker at the event.
