Euro2016: ecumenical celebration before Poland-Germany match

To coincide with the Poland-Germany match in the Euro 2016 European football cup, due at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis on June 16th at 9.00 pm, an ecumenical celebration will be held at Frankfurt’s Commerzbank-Arena to commemorate the victims of the Paris terrorist attacks and as evidence of the special relations that bind Poland and Germany together. After a joint prayer, the congregation, all together, will watch the football match on a large TV screen. “You’ll never walk alone – on the field of life” is the name of the celebration, which will be attended by the dean of the Catholic Church of Frankfurt, don Johannes zu Eltz, and the leader of the Evangelical church of Hessen and Nassau, Volker Jung. “The religious event was prepared by sport-loving Polish and German theologians”, the spokesman of the Evangelical church explains. The captain of the Polish team and Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski has stated on several occasions that he is very fond of Catholicism. “Faith helped me be successful”, he firmly states that, even out of the football pitch, “in prayer he can get rid of his anxieties and worries”. In addition to the best Polish player of the time, winger Jakub Blaszczykowski and goalkeeper Artur Boruc too are well known for their religiosity.
