Sweden: a pilgrimage to Rome for the canonisation of Elizabeth Hasselblad

There will be an ecumenical delegation from Sweden at the canonisation of Elizabeth Hasselblad on June 5th in St Peter’s Square in Rome. “The Catholic diocese of Stockholm is organising a pilgrimage to Rome with about 250 pilgrims from all over Sweden”, this is written on the website of the Swedish Church Council. “The group includes ecumenical guests of the Council, such as the general secretary Karin Wiborn”. The Mass, officiated by Pope Francis, will also be aired live on SVT2, the second channel of the state TV. The delegation will include a group of relatives of the saint, and delegates of the Municipality of Herrljunga, where the future saint, Hasselblad, was born on June 4th 1870, in a large Lutheran family. Emigrated to the United States at the age of 18, she worked as a nurse taking care of weak people in New York. In 1902 she converted to Catholicism and one year later she moved to Rome. In 1911, she founded the order of Ss. Salvatoris S. Brigidae, a branch of the order founded by St Bridget in 1300. During the Second World War, Elizabeth Hasselblad hid many Jews in the monastery in Piazza Farnese, Rome, which earned her the honour of “Righteous among the Nations” of the State of Israel. Elizabeth Hasselblad died in Rome on April 24th 1957. “The canonisation of a Swede is a very rare event”, states a release of the Church Council. The last time was in 1391, when St Bridget was canonised by Pope Boniface IX.
