Europe: Youth Charlemagne Prize to an Italian project for the social inclusion of refugees

(Brussels) – The European Youth Charlemagne Prize 2016 has been awarded to the Italian project “Integreat”. The project, designed to promote the social inclusion of refugees in the EU, came first at the prize organised by the European Parliament and the International Charlemagne Prize Foundation (the same one that will give the 2016 Prize to Pope Francis in the Vatican, on Friday. The award, as explained in a note by the European Assembly, “is given to young people aged 16 to 30 who are involved in projects that help promote mutual understanding between peoples of different European countries”. The awards ceremony took place in Aachen yesterday. This year’s three awards (a diploma, a medal and a cheque to each one) have been won by: Aiesec Italia (university students’ association) for a “project that aims at connecting young people from all over Europe, to help them respond to the current refugee crisis and promote the social inclusion” of migrants; secondary-school students from Pirgetos, Larissa (Greece), who developed a tablet game about Charlemagne (742-814 AD) who used to be called “The Father of Europe” as the maker of the Holy Roman Empire; lastly, the third award went to Great Britain, to the Young European Council, promoter of an international yearly conference that brings together young people who are interested in the future of the European Union.
