Austria: Caritas Vienna, charity work of the Canisibus food truck goes on

In Praterstern, a suburb of Vienna, too often making the headlines for crime news and social malaise, Caritas has been working for 26 consecutive years with a travelling project: Canisibus, a little bus fitted out as a food truck and as a store which, driving along a trail with scheduled or flag stops (like any public transport), gives hot meals and a smile to the poor people and the outcasts of the Austrian capital. Now the service is getting wider and covering other areas of Vienna as well, in the light of ever increasing calls for help and the massive number of refugees who live there. Over 100 volunteers serve meals in the Canisibus in shifts: “Even if many guests are reluctant to step fowrad, we wait until they come to us – the coordinator of the project, Josef Heinzl, explains – and they are simply glad to come back at least for one hot meal a day. And this is why we are in the streets every night”. While beforehand the centre of malaise was the area around the old Leopoldstadt station, now the statistics say that Praterstern has record-breaking numbers of outcasts and crimes, with high rates of alcohol consumption. “Needs increase with the summer, and we always need more staff to help us”, Heinzl confirms, and there are many pensioners and students who come to help the permanent volunteer staff at the busiest times”.
