Drugs: EU Monitoring Centre, “young people using more ecstasy”. 2 million “clients” in the last year

“Europe is experiencing increasing problems with drugs. New psychoactive substances, stimulants, heroin and other opioids are still relevant to demand and supply alike, with substantial repercussions on public health. That’s why the European Report on Drugs 2016 is an important completion to our knowledge basis on the problem of drugs, as well as a useful tool to enable European policy-makers to outline policies and measures to address such problem”. Dimitris Avramopoulos, European commissioner for internal affairs, comments on the 2016 report published by the Lisbon-based European Monitoring Centre on drugs and Drug Addictions (Emcdda). The report confirms that Mdma – known and sold as “ecstasy” – has made a comeback as an illegal stimulant chosen by young people in Europe, mentioning “signs that suggest” that Ecstasy “is becoming more popular with regular stimulant users and with a new generation of young users”. According to the European Agency’s figures, “about 2.1 million young adults (15-34 years old) state they have used Mdma in the last year (1.7% in this age range)”. “Even if until not long ago the use of Mdma was decreasing, after the peak levels of the mid-2000s, the latest surveys found that it is being increasingly used in Europe”.
