Luxembourg: Theves (Caritas), fund raising to support breadline children in the Grand Duchy

There is 1 breadline child out of 4 in Luxembourg. The economically weakest households are single parent ones. The worrying figure drove the Caritas agency of the Grand Duchy to set up a fund raising campaign called “Caritas Challenge”. The funds will be used for four emergencies, as explained by the coordinator, Caroline Theves. One of such priorities is helping families “feed their children more regular, well balanced meals” using the Caritas food banks where healthy food is available at much lower prices than in supermarkets. Then, in partnership with “Young Caritas”, funds will also be raised to enable economically disadvantaged families give their children “enriching experiences with other children in holiday resorts”. A third initiative – mainly addressed to foreign children – is about social inclusion, through proper training courses: languages, literacy, vocational training or revision for getting a diploma. Lastly, Caritas will give part of the funds to the “dis-positive” project to help teenagers, who are no longer entitled to state benefits, to cope with daily and school problems due to learning disabilities. “Everyone is called to organise sports events, cake sales, bingo and charity evenings” as fund raising events.
