Malta: mgr. Scicluna, “at the centre of a culture of compassion ad solidarity”

“We Maltese must be at the centre of a culture of compassion and solidarity”, of “a Europe that does not build walls, but bridges and corridors of mercy, as Moas is doing, to bring people from Libya to countries where they can find dignity again”. With these words, the archbishop of Malta, monsignor Charles Scicluna, spoke last Saturday to the press and media people, whom he met on board the Phoenix, “the ship of mercy”, as the archbishop defined it, at the service of Moas (Migrant Offshore Aid Station), a charitable search and rescue organisation that has rescued 13,500 people in the Mediterranean since 2014. “Communication is merciful when it is the expression of human solidarity and compassion”, said Scicluna in these postponed Maltese celebration of World Communications Day. And he added: “We Maltese come from a tradition of compassion and mutual acceptance, and we must continue this experience that has brought us not only Paul the apostle but many people who have made our nation richer”. The bishop thanked the press for its efforts to “educate young people, and even older ones, to a culture of acceptance and to a culture that has the courage to risk, because accepting someone means taking a risk”, as in any human relationship.
