Human Trade: EU Commission, the number of Roma and disabled victims is increasing

(Brussels) The EU Commission report on human trade in Europe says that “one of the data with higher increase is the number of minor victims of traders”. Moreover, “the number of Roma and disabled victims is increasing”. The report illustrated today points out connections of human trade with other kinds of crimes, as well as “exploitation of the most vulnerable people in the context of the current migration crisis, and increase in the use of the Internet and new technologies to get victims”. EU Anti-Trafficking Coordinator Myria Vassiliadou says: “The 2011 adoption of the anti-trade directive was a strong impetus, focussing on this remarkable problem in the EU, and on the need to tackle it with a wide range of instruments: from criminal law to preventive measures. As clearly shown by the trends and challenges indicated in this report, Member States should intensify their efforts to effectively implement the Directive, and to perform the tasks set by the Directive itself”. By the end of 2016, the Commission will publish two reports appraising the degree of conformity with the Directive and its achievability, as well as a post-2016 strategy for the struggle against human trade.
