Germany: deacon Faymonville as spiritual assistant for the Olympics. “Faith and travelling companion”

The Olympic Games will take place in Rio de Janeiro from 5th to 25th August. And according to tradition the athletes of the German Olympic team will be able to use a pastoral and spiritual assistance service, both Catholic and Evangelical. Deacon Rolf Faymonville from the archdiocese of Cologne will officiate services for the Catholic chantry. “Sometimes such an option comes totally unexpected, as it happened to me – the deacon told – . The Olympic Games are certainly the highlight in a sports career. This is a source of joy but it increases stress and efforts too”. Faymonville’s work will be connected with that of his Protestant colleague, pastor Thomas Weber. “I would like to be both a spiritual trainer and a travelling companion”, pointed out the deacon, because his being in Rio would be preferable, for suggestions, conversations, joint prayers. The Rio Olympics will also be an opportunity to accomplish a long-term plan of social micro-projects associated with the athletes, called “Rio bewegt.Uns”, a pun that means “Rio moves. Us”. There will be a chance to experience the real social conditions, and the “Catholic partners will make efforts, along with the athletes, to give a major contribution to more social equity and justice”. All the initiatives that the German Olympic team has planned are described at http://www.rio-bewegt-uns.de.
