WYD 2016: two million young people and one billion on social media. Most of them are Italian

From the Salesian seminary just out of Cracow, which is hosting a meeting about the WYD, promoted by the Council of European Bishops Conferences (Ccee), and attended by about 50 journalists and delegates of many bishops conferences of the Old Continent, the spokesperson of the Polish Bishops, don Pawel Rytel Adrianik, recalls that “never before had the use of social networks been so widespread, more than Madrid and Rio de Janeiro, where the last two WYDs were held. Through the social media, we could get close to one billion people from Cracow”. There are the figures to confirm that. At the Madrid WYD in 2011 followers of the WYD Facebook page were 400 thousand, one million at the WYD Rio de Janeiro in 2013. In Cracow, with less than three months to go, the WYD page on the world’s most famous social platform, produced in 20 languages, has over one and a half million followers. And that’s not all, because the YouTube channel of the Polish WYD can boast 3.2 billion of them. The WYD video has been viewed 3 million times, so far. Followers on Twitter are 215 thousand, and those on Instagram and other networks are on the rise. In Cracow, there will be 1,200 bishops, including all of the Slovakian Bishops Conference, 14 thousand priests and 25 thousand volunteers who will take care of the pilgrims. Those registered so far are 573 thousand. Most of them are Italian, 79,456 of them so far, with 128 bishops. But here in Cracow they are sure 120 thousand of them will come. They are followed, a long way down, by the Spanish, 37,909 with 53 bishops, the French, 34,226 with 79 bishops, and the US, 23,234 with 87 bishops. Groups coming for the first time include South Sudan and Kosovo. There will be a large group of Palestinians – not the first time at WYDs for them – registered for the first time as “State of Palestine”, as pointed out by the spokesperson.
