London Mayor: card. Nichols’ wishes to Mayor Khan, called to face the “big challenges of the city”

The newly appointed Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, receives the congratulations of cardinal Vincent Nichols, archbishop of Westminster and primate of the Catholic Church of England and Wales, as well. A human rights lawyer, a Muslim of Pakistani origin and the son of labourers, Khan has been chosen by 57% of Londoners, an unprecedented mandate. “I welcome – cardinal Nichols says – the appointment of Sadiq Khan as new Mayor of London. I will pray for him, in his appointment to this important position, in which he will have to face the big challenges of London, in its richness, diversity and energy”. The archbishop quoted what Pope Francis said last Friday, when he received the Charlemagne Prize in the presence of all European leaders, when he called politicians to defeat “poverty and social exclusion” and bet on the extraordinary beauty that the European cities have retained over time, not least because of their diversity. “May this spirit – cardinal Nichols wished to Mayor Khan – inspire our new Mayor”.
