On Friday, 6th May, in the Sala Regia of the Vatican, Pope Francis will receive the Charlemagne Prize. The 2016 award, which is granted once a year by the Aachen foundation, has been given to Jorge Mario Bergoglio for his efforts in building a peaceful Europe, based on shared values and open to other peoples and other continents. The awards ceremony will be attended by the President of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz, the president of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, and the president of the European Council, Donald Tusk. A debate will be held in Rome the day before, 5th May, about the state of European integration. Such event will take place – according to EU sources – at the Museo Capitolino, in the hall in which the treaties that created the European Community were signed, on 27th March 1957. The Italian Prime Minister, Matteo Renzi, Juncker, Schulz and Tusk, and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, will be there.
