Europe: Politico.eu celebrates its 1st birthday. “American” journalism in Brussels to keep an eye on the Old Continent

Politico.eu, a US-born online title, which, with German support, has had a European edition since last year, celebrates its 1st birthday. A leading article that takes stock of the situation and that has been written today by director John Harris, editor in chief Matthew Kaminski and CEO Sheherazade Semsar-de Boisseson mentions 6,100 published articles and 1.5 million readers who have read the news published by Politico.eu, the result of the efforts of 80 journalists and writers of 19 different nationalities. “Europe had not seen such a year since 1989, or maybe 1945”, the article states, listing “British election, the Greek euro crisis, and then the refugee crisis, the Brexit tragedy, the terrorist attacks that hit close to home, in Paris and Brussels, as well as plenty more things in between”. The title has always tried to do journalism, it states, “authoritatively, quickly, deeply and hopefully with intelligence and a bit of mischief”, to arouse Brussels’ “debates and people who too many people saw as boring”, and to “connect the dots between the centres of power” without any partisan or nationalist intentions. Many have been the interviews with leaders of institutions, presidents and prime ministers, EU commissioners. The article speaks of “a small but united and vibrant team”.
