Holy See: first meeting of the Council of the General Secretariat of the Episcopal Synod

The first meeting of the XIV Ordinary Council of the General Secretariat of the Episcopal Synod chaired by the Pope took place on 18th and 19th April. This has been announced by the Newsroom of the Holy See, saying that the meeting began with the speech of the general secretary, cardinal Lorenzo Baldisseri, who in his opening address thanked the Pope for being there and for his recent publication of the post-Synod Apostolic Exhortation “Amoris Laetitia”. “These words – the release says – have been shared by all the Council Members, as proof of the wide reception given to the Document by the Particular Churches all over the world”. Later on, “the results of the consultation promoted to choose a theme for the next Ordinary General Meeting with the Ministries of the Roman Curia, the Bishops Conferences, the Eastern Churches and the Union of Superiors General, have been reviewed. After a wide discussion, some ideas have been found about the themes that will be submitted to the Holy Father for his review”. Finally, the Council Members exchanged views about the revision of the Ordo Synodi Episcoporum, the last item on the agenda. As to this, monsignor Fabio Fabene, undersecretary of the Episcopal Synod, held a report about the workshop specifically organised by the General Secretariat, following the Holy Father’s speech of 17th October 2015. The Council Members further investigated this issue by splitting into Circuli Minores and, at the plenary session, they eventually submitted a report about their efforts. “The Groups’ reports also showed that the promotion of synodality and collegiality must always go hand in hand with the exercise of the ministry of the Bishop of Rome, so as to profitably join primacy, collegiality and synodality together”, the release states. In closing the meeting, Pope Francis thanked the Council Members for their contribution and for the spirit of fraternal communion experienced during the meeting.
