Council of Europe: PACE, conflicts and refugee crisis. Davutoglu (Turkey), “solving the causes of migration”

Strasburgo: il premier turco Davutoglu interviene all'Assemblea parlamentare del Consiglio d'Europa

(Strasbourg) Refugee crisis, fight against terrorism, “radicalisation”, respect of human rights, situation in Crimea and Ukraine, anti-Semitism: the plenary session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), gathered in Strasbourg until April 22nd, will be discussing several hot topics, which will be dealt with by international first-class speakers: they include the president of Austria, Heinz Fischer, the president of the EU Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, the Turkish Prime Minister, Ahmet Davutoglu, the Prime Minister of Georgia, Giorgi Kvirikashvili. The refugee crisis takes centre stage, with all that it involves: from war in Syria to the refugees who are now in many countries (mainly in Turkey, Western Balkans, Mediterranean Europe) through to the European countries’ response. Yesterday, the Turkish Prime Minister, Ahmet Davutoğlu, mentioned that his country is committed to taking in the refugees who are fleeing conflicts in Syria and Iraq, pointing out that “Turkey is now hosting the highest number of refugees in the world”. “Our country has opened its doors to these people, and above all we have opened our hearts”. The recent EU-Turkey agreement is reducing the number of migrants who cross the Mediterranean Sea and, he pointed out, it could save human lives, “but a long-term solution requires measures that address the causes of conflict at the source”.
