Safe driving: 26 thousand victims in the EU in one year. EU Commission, “new efforts to save human lives”

Violeta Bulc, commissaria Ue responsabile per i Trasporti

(Brussels) The 2015’s statistics on safe driving published by the EU Commission “confirm that European roads are still the safest in the world, even if the reduction in the number of road traffic victims has recently slowed down”. Last year, 26 thousand people lost their lives on the roads of the 28 EU member states, 5,500 fewer than in 2010, “while no improvement can be found in the EU compared with 2014”. According to the EU Commission’s estimates, in addition, 135 thousand people “have been seriously injured on the roads” of the European Union. “The social cost (rehabilitation, healthcare, material damage…) of people who die or are injured in car accidents has been estimated to be at least 100 billion euros”. Transport Commissioner Violeta Bulc stated, yesterday: “Every single death or serious injury is one too much. Over the last decades, we managed to dramatically reduce the number of road traffic victims, but the current slowdown is worrying. We must do much more, if Europe wants to achieve the goal of halving the number of road traffic victims by 2020”. “It is especially the member states that have to take measures, since most actions are implemented daily on a national and local level: enforcing driving regulations, developing and maintaining the infrastructure, as well as educational and awareness-raising campaigns”.
