Greece-Macedonia: Caritas Bolzano, 50 thousand euros for refugee crisis in Idomeni. “Tragic situation”

The south Tyrol branch of Caritas sends 50 thousand euros towards the supply of baby food, nappies, toiletries and rubber boots for the refugee camp in Idomeni, on the border between Greece and Macedonia. At least 12 thousand people, including 4 thousand children, are “living amidst needs and uncertainties”. “While the Greek Government hopes it may clear the refugee camp of Idomeni by the end of April – as explained in a note by Caritas Bolzano – by relocating the refugees to temporary centres all over Greece, the situation for the over 12 thousand people camped somehow is increasingly tragic. Weather conditions are not helping: rainwater often seeps into the tents, and people cannot find protection from the cold and damp”. “There are smoke and bad smells everywhere from rubbish and wastewater. Several hundreds of people are suffering from bronchitis, diarrhoea and breathing problems. If the warm weather comes, it may bring infectious conditions such as typhus and cholera”. At the invitation of the Caritas network that has its workers and volunteers in Greece and in all the main refugee camps along the “Balkan route”, the south Tyrol branch of Caritas then allocated 50 thousand euros “towards the aids that are taking place in Idomeni”, consisting in the supply of basic items.
