Council of Europe: international conference in Sofia on endangered children’s rights

The inflows of refugees, the quick development of the digital world and the economic crisis that affect today’s Europe involve new risks on children’s fundamental rights. To try to find a joint response to such challenges, a high-level conference, organised by the Council of Europe, will be held in Sofia with speakers from the member states. The event is due to take place on 5th and 6th April as part of the Bulgarian presidency of the Council of Europe, one of whose priorities is actually children’s rights. The new strategy of the Council of Europe about children’s rights for 2016-2021 will be officially launched on the occasion: it lays down equal opportunities for all children, children’s participation in decision-making processes, a violence-free life and a made-for-children legal system, as well as children’s rights in the digital environment. Guest speakers will include the President of Bulgaria, Rossen Plevneliev, Gabriella Battaini-Dragoni, deputy general secretary of the Council of Europe, and Benyam Dawit Mezmur, president of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child, while the opening address will be given by the CoE Commissioner for Human Rights, Nils Muižnieks. In addition, 18 ministers of the member states, delegates of NGOs working in children’s rights, including Caritas Europe and a group of children, telling their personal stories, will be there too.
