Poland: Bishops’ appeal to protect human life in any circumstance

“When talking about the defence of the life of unborn children, one cannot settle for the compromise reached with the current 1993 Act”, state the Polish Bishops in a release posted today, before the National Day of the Holiness of Life, which will be celebrated on April 4th this year. The current legislation accepts abortion in instances of serious malformation of the foetus, serious danger for the life of the mother or the foetus, and when the baby has been conceived in rape. The Bishops point out that “the life of any human being is protected by the Fifth Commandment of the Decalogue”, so “it must be protected from conception to natural death”. Then, the Bishops Conference calls on “Members of Parliament and rulers” to “adopt legal initiatives and schemes that provide actual support to parents of sick, disabled children or children conceived in rape”. The prelates point out that their appeal, made to coincide with the 1050th anniversary of the Christianisation of Poland (966), is addressed “to all men of good will, believers and non believers”, who are called “to pray for the full protection of human life”, both in Poland and outside its borders.
