Bosnia and Herzegovina: Easter in Sarajevo in the name of mercy. Holy Door, targeted by snipers during wartime, open at Cathedral

Easter in Sarajevo will be celebrated in the name of mercy, twenty years after the end of one of the longest sieges in modern history (April 1992-February 1996). Everyone hopes that this Easter will mark a new passage, a new Resurrection, from a divided to a reconciled country. In the meanwhile, the Easter Triduum celebrations are in full swing for the some 460,000 catholics of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The cathedral dedicated to the Sacred Heart, located in the historic heart of the capital Sarajevo (home to 14,000 catholics), is the focal point of the celebrations that started yesterday afternoon with the rite of the Washing of the Feet performed on 12 faithful. And today, there will be Eucharistic Adoration all day long. Special attention will be given to reconciliation with priests available to hear the confessions of those faithful who wish to receive the Sacrament. At 6pm, there will be the celebration of the Lord’s Passion, presided over by card. Vinko Puljić, archbishop of Sarajevo and president of the Bosnian bishops’ conference. Adoration and confessions will continue tomorrow before the Easter Vigil at 9pm. On Easter day, the main celebration at 10.30am will be presided over by card. Puljić and will be broadcast live by the Bosnian and Herzegovinian TV. On its opening on 13 December 2015, the cathedral’s main entrance has become the Holy Door of Mercy, a door which was closed during wartime since it was targeted by snipers.
