Poland: National Life Day. Message of the Senate, “Protect every human being”

In Poland, during the National Life Day (24 March), and with a view to the Holy Life Day on 4 April, the Senate recalls that those events are a special opportunity for “deep meditation on the gift of life”. “The National Life Day is an opportunity to promote – on national scale – reflection on the responsibilities of State authorities, society and public opinion for respect of human life, and above all, the lives of the smallest and weakest, at the mercy of others”. The National Life Day was officially declared in Poland in 2004. According to the Senators, it should be “a sound reason for more solidarity, and for inspiring actions meant to support and defend every human life”. The Holy Life Day celebrated by the Polish Church was introduced in the liturgical calendar in 1998, in response to the encyclical letter “Evangelium Vitae” of John Paul II. After a motion by some members of the Polish parliament, including MEP Marek Jurek, the Polish parliament is now debating the new law forbidding abortion even in case such practice is perceived as admissible (violence, mother’s life in danger, serious fetus deformity).
