Pope Francis: audience, Jesus tells us: “If I could suffer more for you, I would suffer more”. Julian of Norwich cited

“This is our Jesus, who tells each of us: if I could suffer more for you, I would suffer more”. Pope Francis said this speaking off the cuff at his General Audience catechesis today, dedicated to the Paschal Triduum. He cited Julian of Norwich, “an illiterate woman who had visions of the Passion of Jesus and, after becoming a recluse, described in a simple but intense and profound language the meaning of merciful love”. Pope Francis cited her dialogue with Jesus: “Then our good Lord put a question to me: ‘Are you well satisfied that I suffered for you?’ I said: ‘Yes, good Lord, all my thanks to you; yes, good Lord, blessed may you be’. Then Jesus our good Lord said: ‘If you are satisfied, I am satisfied. It is a joy, a bliss, an endless delight to me that ever I suffered my Passion for you; and if I could suffer more, I would suffer more’”. According to the Pope, Easter is “a great mystery of love and mercy. And our words are poor and insufficient to describe it fully”. “These are wonderful words!”, Pope Francis remarked, referring to Julian’s words: “They make us truly understand the Lord’s immense and infinite love for each of us!”. “Let us allow ourselves to be embraced by this mercy that comes to us”, Pope Francis said. “In these days, as we contemplate the Passion and Death of our Lord and await his Resurrection, let us welcome in our hearts his great love!”.
