Cardinal Bagnasco: “what does Europe look like” the way it behaves with migrants?

“The recent murder of four nuns of Mother Teresa in Yemen, along with another ten people, shows, once again, a brutal fury thrown at the Christian faith and the gentle force of faith that drives their Sisters to continue their loving service”. This was said by cardinal Angelo Bagnasco, archbishop of Genoa and president of the Italian Bishops Conference (CEI), who, in his opening speech at the Permanent Council of the Italian Bishops that is going on in Genoa, pointed out that, “along with bloody religious persecutions, the tragic exodus of migrants and refugees, who are walking to the north of the planet and, like poor Lazarus, knock on the doors of the wealthier countries, goes on”. “4,200 people have died, including 330 children, in the Aegean Sea alone, since the early 2015!”, the cardinal burst out: “What does Europe look like? It should look at the flabby, scared faces of children and old people, of these people who endure unspeakable toils, pains, dangers, ready to disappear and even lose their lives. And who often do not want or can no longer go back”. “Can Europe, the cradle of civilisations and rights, build walls and dig trenches?”, the president of CEI asked himself: “A smart watch is a duty – and our police have proven that over the last few days as well –, the integration strategy is not easy, but are the European Home and the United Nations themselves facing such humanitarian cataclysm with vision and effectiveness?”.
