Luxembourg: ecumenical commemoration for the 500th anniversary of the reform started by Luther

Margot Kässman, bishop of the German Evangelical Church

The commemoration for the 500th anniversary of the reform started by Luther officially opens in Luxembourg today. From tonight and until Sunday, three events of reflection and prayer will be held by the German bishop Margot Kässman, who has been the ambassador of the Council of the German Evangelical Church for the Jubilee of the Reform 2017, since 2012. The first event, tonight, will see the internationally-known evangelical theologian reflecting on the theme: “Reform and Christian world, a challenge”; in tomorrow morning’s event, Kässman will try to answer the question: “What positive momentum do I expect of the Jubilee of Reform?”. On Sunday, instead, reflections will be made as part of an ecumenical celebration, which the organisers regard as the “spiritual beginning of the initiatives for the Jubilee of Reform 2017” in Luxembourg. The prayer will be officiated by the Catholic archbishop Jean-Claude Hollerich and the evangelical pastor Hans-Martin Heins. Margot Kässman will be in charge of preaching, starting from the assumption that “the renewal of the Church can only be born of the presence of God and the Gospel of Jesus Christ”. This initiative, like those that will follow in the next few months, are jointly organised by the German-speaking evangelical community, the Protestant Reformed Church of Luxembourg and the Catholic Church.
