Netherlands: Vastenactie (Catholic Foundation), Lent at school. Solidarity with students in Uganda

A very special tour through the Netherlands is starting off today: an Ugandan group of children and teenagers, along with their leaders, will be visiting 45 Dutch primary schools and will tell them about the schooling experiences of Africa, will teach an Ugandan song to Dutch children, and they will dance together. The initiative is organised by the Catholic foundation Vastenactie, “A Campaign for Lent”, a charity founded in 1961 by the Bishops Conference to raise funds for international development projects. A video that films a day at school for two Ugandan children, Samuel and Elise, in their classes, will also be shown in the Dutch schools. “One feels a veritable culture shock”, Angelique Steysel, project manager, explains, “one instantly understands that what we do have in the Netherlands, and that a nice soft bed or shoes are not taken for granted by everyone”. During the “forty days for friendship and peace”, the Dutch students will also be engaged in an amazing collection of plastic bottles: proceeds from the sale will be given over to the Ugandan schools; but the other purpose of the initiative is to raise the schools’ awareness of recycling things and the protection of Creation.
