Comece: 2 to 4 March, plenary assembly on “Europe’s call to promote peace in the world”

“Europe’s call to promote peace in the world” will be the theme addressed by the 27 bishops of the Commission of the EU Bishops Conferences (Comece) in their meeting in Brussels from 2nd to 4th March for their “Spring plenary assembly”, an event held “behind closed doors”. It has been announced this morning by the secretariat of Comece, explaining in a note that “Comece’s bishops will be updated by experts about the geopolitical situation at the southern and eastern external borders of the EU and about the new challenges for security”. The note also states that the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security, Federica Mogherini, “has been invited” to speak to the bishops “about the profile of the EU’s new global strategy for foreign affairs and security”. Geopolitical news will go hand in hand with a theological and ethical reflection on the value of peace, which will be chaired by don Seán Healy (Social Justice, Ireland). In addition, the bishops will discuss a draft document on Europe’s call to promote peace in the world, jointly drawn up by Comece and the European Commission Justitia et Pax. Some time will then be expressly spent talking about the problem of refugees in Europe, with the Austrian bishop Ägidius Zsifkovics giving a report about the situation and about the meeting that recently took place in Heiligenkreuz on 16th February between the bishops of the countries where the current migrant inflows enter, pass through and go to.
