EU Parliament: Tribute to Aldo Moro. Mr Weber (EPP), “Politics shaped by faith”

(Brussels) “Aldo Moro was a practising and committed Catholic and his faith was reflected in his political life”. In an interview with SIR, Manfred Weber, chair of the Group of the European People’s Party (EPP) in the European Parliament, gives an insight into the figure of the Italian statesman Aldo Moro, on the occasion of today’s inauguration at the headquarters of the European Parliament in Brussels of a room named after him. According to Mr Weber, Aldo Moro “was a tenacious mediator, a politician with a proven ability to coordinate the different ‘strains’ of Christian Democracy”. “I do believe – Mr Weber adds – that we do not have to be sorry to speak the truth. The truth is always enlightening; it helps us to be courageous. In order to solve today’s complex problems, such as the migrant crisis, we have to show the same determination and courage” as Aldo Moro. The inauguration ceremony of the ASP3G2 room in the “Altiero Spinelli” building will begin at 1pm and will be chaired by the President of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz. It will be followed by a conference entitled “Aldo Moro’s contribution to European integration”. Besides Martin Schulz, the conference will be attended by the president of the Italian Senate, Pietro Grasso; the president of the bicameral commission of enquiry into the death of Aldo Moro, Giuseppe Fioroni; the former president of the European Parliament, Hans-Gert Poettering; EP vice-presidents Antonio Tajani and David Sassoli; the Italian Minister of Cultural Heritage and Activities, Dario Franceschini; the chair of the EPP Group, Manfred Weber; the chair of the S&D Group Gianni Pittella; and by MEP Lorenza Cesa.
