Austria: card. Schönborn (Vienna), “God bless the new President Van der Bellen”. The country’s role in Europe

“The new President must be the Head of State of all Austrians and unite the country”: this was said by cardinal Christoph Schönborn, archbishop of Vienna and president of the Austrian Bishops Conference, as he commented on the announcement of the results of Austria’s presidential election. The result, that saw independent nominee Alexander Van der Bellen win the election with 53.3% of votes versus the 46.7% of his opponent, Norbert Hofer, confirmed the vote that had already seen the new Austrian President win the election in May that was eventually annulled by the Constitutional Court. “I congratulate Alexander Van der Bellen, and may God bless new the President for his high position. I wish he may be inclined to help make Austria a stable, free and prosperous country. And I wish he may have common sense for Austria’s role in Europe and in the world”, the cardinal said to the Catholic news agency Kathpress. Recalling that, on the occasion of 23rd May’s success, Van der Bellen had spoken of the “two halves that make up Austria and that are equally important”, Schönborn hopes “the new President will go on serving the community in this position”. Then, commenting on the high turnout (74.1% of voters), the cardinal praised the Austrian population “for proving that our country is a mature, stable democracy which we must be grateful for today”.
