Elections in Austria: Card. Schönborn (Vienna), “Pay attention to the convergence virus”

Two days from the second ballot for the election of the Austrian federal president, on Sunday 4 December, Archbishop of Vienna Cardinal Christoph Schönborn warned everyone from the risk of the “dangerous convergence risk”. In the pages of the daily “Heute” (Today), he confirmed the concept of Pope Francis: “This virus follows one principle: the friend-enemy scheme”, said the Cardinal, President of Austrian bishops, because “real understanding is impeded, and the will to meet the other will disappear”. For Schönborn, this perspective is applicable to Austria and the electoral campaign – lasting almost one year – for electing the President of the Republic: “What will it happen after the elections? And will the half of the country, the defeated ones, be able to shake hands with the winners again?”, wondered the Cardinal with anguish. He asked citizens to vote to allow the president elect to perform his task of reconciling the country. Catholic youth also asked young adults to vote: “In a democracy, it is a matter of participation – pointed out President Matthias Kreuzriegler several times – those who do not vote take no responsibility, and leave it to others. Afterwards, no-one has a right to complain”. Kreuzriegler pointed out how “the Christian social ethics may be decisive for one’s choice, but also to express the will to collaborate with a view to mutual support”.
