Sweden: Council of Churches, Christmas campaign for a “human immigration policy”

Today, in Sweden, the Council of Churches is launching the Juluppropet, a “Christmas campaign” for a “human immigration policy”. It is a petition to the government, asking for three things: “that all those who have been taken in Sweden may be entitled to have a family life; that all practical obstacles to family reunions be removed and that all children and young people may assert their right to safety and to a future”, the manifesto explains. “In 2016, Swedish politics has dramatically changed, and in June the Swedish Parliament passed further restrictive asylum laws; not only have the laws been made more restrictive, the authorities’ enforcement of such laws has been made more restrictive too”, the promoters explain. On the website of the petition (www.juluppropet.se), such requests are explained by videos: “We want to give hope to all those children and young people who are now afraid of being expelled because there’s no place for them here”, Catholic bishop Anders Arborelius explains, for instance. “In our churches, we hear many stories and listen to the requests of anxious, desperate people. There is a lot of uncertainty and hesitation. Family situations are getting more complicated for useless reasons”, Lutheran archbishop Antje Jackelen says. A few hours before the launch of the campaign, on the website there are over 5,600 signatures, and they are increasing by the minute. Signatures will be collected until 31st January 2017.
