Russia: dispute between diocese and city of Moscow for return of Saints Peter and Paul’s complex. These buildings are under “religious jurisdiction”

The arbitration between the Catholic archdiocese of the Mother of God and the Government of the City of Moscow will go back to court on 14th November. Actually, the “outrageous lawsuit” goes on, states a notice posted on the website of the archdiocese, which in 2013 had to file a lawsuit against the municipality of the Russian capital for the return of Saints Peter and Paul’s complex of buildings, in the Lubyanka district. Even if documents prove that the property was built between the XIX and the XX centuries with funds of the Catholic Church and its congregation, despite their “having a religious meaning” and being under “religious jurisdiction”, the authorities “repeatedly refused” to return such property to the Catholic Church. As reported by the “Sibirskaja Katoliceskaja Gazeta”, the president of the Cultural Heritage Commission of the State Duma, Stanislav Govorukhin, supports the initiative started by Father Igor Kovalevsky, general secretary of the Russian Bishops Conference, and hopes a peaceful settlement may be reached to put an end to the lawsuit, so that there will be no “consequences on the efforts made by the Russian state politics in keeping the Catholic and the Orthodox Churches at peace, and in defending Christian values”.
