United Kingdom: “The art of dying well”, a website promoted by the Bishops Conference. To defeat a taboo

A “conspiracy of silence”; the fear of talking about it; an “X-rated” subject. Euphemisms, roundabout expressions, metaphors: those word, “death” and “dying”, are taboos in England by now. Nobody ever utters them now. Death – it is acknowledged by the Churches and by the main palliative care associations – is the big unknown that millions of people are scared of. It is in this “void” that the Bishops Conference of England and Wales is launching a website called “The art of dying well” (www.artofdyingwell.org), which explains the secret of a good death, the death you live at home, surrounded by family and friends, supported – if feasible and if interested – by a priest who is encouraging, because this last journey will be a return to that Jesus who has always loved us. The website is split into multiple sections, that deal with subjects, such as “The loss of a beloved one”, “Looking after the dying ones”, “Speaking of death”, and provides practical tips as well as the spiritual resources on which the Church has been relying for centuries. There is also a video, read out by actress Vanessa Redgrave, that tells the story of a Catholic who gets back to the Church before dying and finds great comfort there.
