Germany: German Church, a document about prevention of child sexual abuse

The German National Conference of the diocesan leaders of prevention services published a document, acting as a guideline, called “Children have rights”, addressed to all the pastoral workers who work with the victims of sexual abuse. Issued to coincide with today’s “European Day on the protection of children against sexual exploitation and sexual abuse”, to all intents and purposes the document is a guideline with basic tips and operational or practical measures aimed at implementing “the preventative aids of the Catholic Church”, as written at www.praevention-kirche.de, where the text can be downloaded. In the foreword, the bishop of Trier, mgr. Stephan Ackermann, commissioner of the German Bishops Conferences for child sexual abuse within the Church, wrote that “in the last few years we have gone through this difficult ecclesial process to deal with cases of sexual abuse committed by priests and pastoral workers, and we want to provide new preventative schemes and programmes”. According to Ackermann, it is important “to make sure in future there will be a new culture for the effective cohabitation of children and adolescents with protected growing and living places”. The bishop of Trier pointed out that “this process of the Church is far from being complete, but this must not stop us considering that we are talking about a social issue”.
