Election in Bulgaria: father Cortesi (Belene sanctuary), “let the new president stick to the European route”

“I hope the new president may keep driving Bulgaria along the European route, and I think he will. I wish him to be wise and really unite the country”: this is the comment of father Paolo Cortesi, a Passionist, rector of the National sanctuary of the “Blessed Eugene Bossilkov” in Belene, the day after the presidential election in Bulgaria. Rumen Radev, an ex air-force general, supported by Socialists, won with 59.4% of votes against the president of Parliament, member of the government party, Tsetka Tsatcheva (36.2%). Even if some international media called Radev a pro-Russian nominee, according to father Cortesi, “the situation is not so tragic. Bulgaria has always been in between the West and Russia”. In his opinion, we will have to wait and see how the new president behaves”. “It was a protest vote, and the Bulgarians believed that new nominee Radev, who has not dirtied his hands with politics so far, may fulfil their longing for change”, the priest claims. “The situation looks like that of the USA with Trump, even if Radev does not have a bad reputation and is not a millionaire”.
