Denmark: tenth anniversary of the Christian-Islamic Forum. Christensen (Lutheran), “well-established relationships”

In Denmark, on Saturday 12th November, Christian and Muslim leaders will be celebrating their first decade of dialogue and relationships. The “Christian-Islamic Forum” (Kms) was set up in 2006, a time of very deep tensions running through their relationships, after the publication of the Muhammad cartoons on the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten on 30th September 2005. “We started with very general, simple topics, such as citizenship. At first, it was important for us to just be able to sit at the same table and talk. Then, our relationship has grown stronger and we have managed to deal with topics such as freedom of speech and the radicalisation of young people”, explains Kåre Schelde Christensen, Lutheran. The Forum organises a meeting of dialogue every year, which is attended by 25 Christian leaders and 25 Muslim leaders. This year, it will be about “holy scriptures and democracy”. But the meeting can result in contacts that eventually grow stronger on a daily level: “At the Forum, I met our local imam, and such acquaintance led to many initiatives, such as an interreligious educational project about freedom of religion for our detention facilities”, explained Marianne Christiansen, Lutheran bishop of Haderslev. The process is coordinated by a steering committee that stays in office for one year, composed of five Christians and five Muslims, representing Churches and mosques or other organisations in Denmark. The Catholic Church is represented by Anna Stefanie Thür.
