England and Wales: Bishops’ plenary meeting on Jubilee, Brexit and immigration

Taking stock of the fruit of the Year of Mercy, a reflection on the result of the referendum of 23rd June about Great Britain’s leaving the European Union, and a new document on preparation for marriage presented while the apostolic exhortation “Amoris laetitia” is spread in the 22 dioceses and parishes. In addition to the arrival of the first few Syrian refugees in the United Kingdom, these are the key issues that the Bishops of England and Wales will be talking about during their plenary meeting, which will start at Hinsley Hall, in Leeds, next Monday 14th November and will end on Friday 18th November. It will start with the opening speech of cardinal Vincent Nichols and the apostolic nuncio, archbishop Antonio Mennini, and will end with a proposal for a Eucharistic congress in 2018, just the second one after that held in Birmingham in 2005. “It is not up to the Bishops Conference to talk of the parliamentary and political procedure of the Brexit vote, but the Bishops of England and Wales will keep working with the organisations of the European Bishops, Ccee and Comece, and work with refugees will have a dimension that goes beyond the Channel”, explains a spokesperson of the Bishops. “The Government’s “community sponsorship scheme”, in which the Catholic Church, with Caritas, played a key role, involves the inflow of 20 thousand migrants to the United Kingdom by 2020. The first family of Syrian refugees will arrive in Salford this month”.
