Sweden: Papal visit to mark 500 years since Reformation, joint declaration by Catholic and Lutheran Bishops. “Overcoming obstacles”

“Along the path of ecumenism, there are also obstacles, but we hope that what is now imminent may give impetus to the ecumenical work in our country and be an encouraging sign of hope to the entire world”. This is the conclusion of the long article published in the Swedish Christian daily Dagen, jointly signed by Anders Arborelius, Catholic Bishop of the Diocese of Stockholm, and by Antje Jackelen, Archbishop of the Church of Sweden, less than one month ahead of Pope Francis’ visit to the country, which the two Bishops call “a historic event”. On 31 October, the anniversary of the Reformation, “for the first time ever, the leaders of the Catholic Church and of the Lutheran World Federation will look at the Reformation together”. The event is one of the “visible fruits” of “fifty years of dialogue between Catholics and Lutherans”, the two Bishops wrote, recalling the signing of the “Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification” and of the document “From Conflict to Communion”. The Bishops also explained that the event “Together in Hope” at the Malmö Arena is meant to be a “witness to God’s mercy for the world”. They also announced that Caritas Internationalis and the World Service are to sign a joint Memorandum “as a concrete sign of their desire to strengthen their ties. We are all invited to “seize this opportunity to proclaim Jesus Christ so that the world may believe” and to “pray and work for the good of the Gospel”.
