Bishops of the Eastern Churches: a meeting in Fatima. Card. Sandri, “Europeans too have been migrants. Remembering it from an ecclesial point of view”

“We are here as Catholic Eastern Churches in Europe, because we too care for the future and identity of this continent, and we want to walk with the bishops of the Latin Church to show the unity and beauty of being all part of the universal Church, which welcomes a wide variety of expressions and traditions”. It was stated by cardinal Leonardo Sandri, prefect of the Congregation for Eastern Churches, who is attended the meeting of the bishops of the Catholic Eastern Churches in Europe, promoted by Ccee (Lisbon-Fatima, Portugal, 20-23 October). As to migration, a phenomenon that has deeply affected the Catholic Eastern Churches too, cardinal Sandri pointed out that “Europeans, Italians, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Polish, Hungarian people …have been migrants. We must remember this, even from an ecclesial point of view”. The cardinal prefect admits that “sometimes one is unprepared”, and one is not familiar with the migrants’ background, “so that’s why forms of minimalist reductionism are implemented” such as Mass in the Arabic language but in the Latin rite, and without considering the different ecclesial origins in which “Arabic is usually the language of everyday life but not a tool of ecclesial identity and belonging”.
