EU Parliament: European common defence, car gases, preparations for the plenary meeting on the agenda

(Brussels) On Thursday 20th October, the Foreign Affairs Commission of the European Parliament will consider the option to set up a common defence system across the European Union. “The MEPs are likely to propose to call the member states – a release states – to create multinational quotas by allocating 2% of the GDP to common defence and revising the defence and security policy as a whole”. The aim is “to give the EU more tools to deal with all the stages in a crisis (prevention, management and settlement”. Today, the Investigative Committee will finish its hearings on the measurement of car gases: today’s hearing will involve Harald Wester, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ engineering manager. “Then, the members will discuss the results of their surveys of the Common Research Centre of Ispra, Italy, and car component manufacturers, type-approval authorities and technical facilities in France, Luxembourg and Germany”. This week, the political parties at the EU Parliament will be busy preparing the plenary session due in Strasbourg from 24th to 27th October. There, the MEPs will vote on the 2017 budget and on a draft legislation that calls the member states to implement a mechanism for fundamental rights.
