Sweden: Council of the Churches, “Spiritual development of the minor among the duties of the Authority for Children”

“Different religions are an important resource for the community, not a threat. We believe the mission of the Authority for Children should include questions relating to religious freedom and the right of children to spiritual development”. That is the conclusion of the stance of the Swedish Church Council about a report by the Ministry of Social Affairs, relating to the extent the Swedish legislation respects the parameters of the Universal Convention for Children’s Rights. According to the Churches, the study does not clearly define “religion and spiritual development” and is somewhat ambiguous, for instance, in the case of children entrusted to social services. “Those state structures would be authorised to take care of the religious and spiritual development of children?” Maybe with competences relating to communities? Or when children come from areas with religions different from the most outspread religion? For those reasons, the Churches believe that to meet this children’s right, the State should “collaborate with religious representatives”, in order “to fully respect the Convention in the Swedish legislation”. In 2015, 35 thousand unaccompanied minors arrived in Sweden from Afghanistan, Syria, Somalia, Eritrea, Iraq and Ethiopia (Human Rights Watch).
